Public Library Multilingual Book Information Collection Project
As a part of its activities to support native language learning of migrant children in Japan, MICLE Project is investigating the availability of non-Japanese language books in Japanese public libraries with the participation of local citizens and library users. In libraries in United States and Canada, one can borrow books in various languages other than English reflecting the demographic composition of the local residents. Ensuring the availability of books, DVD’s and magazines in different languages can not only be useful to the migrant communities, it will also be an opportunity for Japanese speakers to learn about diverse languages and cultures.

The data will provide you the statistic about the nationality of the residents in the given city or ward.
This may help you to think about what language books would be good to have in the public libraries in the area of your residence. We hope you can check library shelves, library’s reference services to research about the availability of multiple language books.
We plan to collect information about the books until the end of 2024 and publish the compiled result on the homepage by March 2025.
